So I think I have a new addiction.

When Makily was born I stopped doing her baby book altogether. To be brutally honest it was TOO painful to do. I attempting scrap booking for her a few times. Just sifting through pictures would bring me to tears. I put a lot of the NICU memorabilia in "the drawer" in her room. I don't go in "the drawer" because it depresses me so much.

It's sad her baby book is empty except for details of my pregnancy and descriptions of how happy and excited I was to be having her.

During our foster care classes they explained that it's encouraged to start or continue a "life book" for your foster children. They said that when a child has no pictures or nurturing memories from their bio parents when they are very small, that when they get older sometimes they don't believe they were actually "born" to anyone. Sometimes they feel that they were just kind of "dropped" onto the earth. If they have a life book to look at pictures and describe what their early years were like, they develop more of a sense of belonging. At least that's what "they" say.

So I started J's life book several weeks ago. It's really a scrap book. I have done six or seven pages in it so far. I would think about the fact that I had not started one for Makily and the guilt would wash over me. Then I would remind myself how painful it has been in the past for me to do it for her and I would push those feelings aside.

Well Sunday I went to the scrap book section of Walmart and found the cutest scrap book. It was THE ONLY one like it there. What's more significant is that it has a "ladybug" theme. It stood out to me like a sore thumb. I LOVE ladybugs and Makily has a ton of lady bug clothes and hair clippies. She even had a lady bug bathing suit and swim cover up last year.

I bought it and picked out several other things to start her book with.

I found myself getting choked up picking out stickers and embellishments for her.

I bought a few "It's a Girl" sticker packs. Of course there are bottles, pacifiers, and one even had a bib in it that says "Feed Me".

For Makily those are wasted stickers.

All the crap that has "your first steps", "i can crawl", "I like to eat", "My first word" was killing me.

I kept forcing myself to look over it.

Then I went over to MICHAELS to get a few more things. I had an awesome pack I had gotten for J and wanted to get another one but in "girl" theme for Makily. I was looking at some other things and found the "quote" packs. For those not in the scraping "world" they are books of vellum type paper with sweet sayings on them.

This one got me:

".......all the things I prayed and hoped for you in my dreams have come true my daughter......."

*Gouge my eyes out with a spoon.....PLEASE?!*

I felt the tears filling my eyes, I threw it down and went to the register with what I had already found.

While I was waiting to check out I kept thinking:

"God why didn't I get that cookie cutter life, why didn't all MY hopes and dreams come true for Makily, why can't I relish in Makily doing simple things like EATING and talking"?

I checked out, got in the car looked at Allen and said:

"Nothing like scrapbook shopping to make me want to throw myself in traffic"!

He looked at me like I had lost it (a typical look I get these days :-).

Once I got home, I sat down and went through what I had purchased. I started thinking and I realize NO ONE has a cookie cutter life. No matter how perfect things may look on the outside......typically inside there are things that are painful and dark. I need to be thankful for what MAKILY CAN DO and what SHE IS rather than what she is not. It's hard sometimes though when just looking at scrap booking supplies at Walmart seems to be rubbing what she can't do in my face.

I did the first page in Makily's book yesterday. I did NOT use any of her NICU pictures for it, her birth pictures are too sad so I don't know when or if I will scrap them.

I think I am going to start looking for "special needs" scrap booking stuff. I don't even know if anyone makes it but if they do I am going to find it.

Hey girl...ok..scrapbooking. Well, as you know..I go to retreats. I was scrapbooking way before Luke. So, when he came..it was so funny to read your thoughts about the stickers. In fact, I detest stickers. I never used them for him. Scrapbook your love girl. And..put those NICU pictures in. Do it. Scrapbook your fight for her, your will to get her the best care. That's what I did. And..someday..it will BLESS. IT WILL BLESS. Love you babe. I'm excited J's getting one as well. But, if you struggle with Makily's..pack those pics up and let me do them for you! I promise..you won't regret it.

Ah...the cookie cutter life?!?!?!
Just last week I was crying why can't we be "normal"? What is "normal" ~ I have not seen it yet....I live in ADD AND ADHD...A son so bright, inattentive, but so angry and aggresive when set off..a daughter that can't read yet due to dyslexia, can't focus, has a speech issue w/ insurance that covers NOTHING unless you are medically disabled, not mentally disabled...Dyslexia and Speech is MENTAL???? Then there is Ireland who currently looks like she has chicken pox, broken out all over in hives from lord knows what? Shots (those nasty shots) are due again....as little as these things sound and as much as we joke as a society about ADD and everything else.....its crippling! Its high stress, every day, all day...and normal? Normal is a word I have found should never been put to use...Shame on "normal"...My house is a mess, my kids are all over the place...my PCP told me last week...Kristy, "the poeple you are talking about, aren't normal either" "they are OCD freaks"!
I too want to scrapbook my kids lives and I don't have sad memories stopping me....I just don't remember where i put the pictures?!?!?! Is ADD contagious? Because, I am almost certain I have it now! Sigh....another day in our life of chaos....who wnats more kids??

Now there's a gap in the market if you ever get the urge to go into business. Special needs scrapbook supplies; what a great idea.

I want ones which have "my cool new wheels" "I'm so cute they gave me an extra button in my tummy" "defying the doctors" "you will dream different dreams"...

I love the ladybird book

I was sooooo glad to see you come full circle on the "cookie cutter" life. I will not say that I understand your journey....I don't. But you're right....EVERYBODY has their "less than perfect" area. What you have is....an absolute miracle! Everyday, you get to watch is a beautiful miracle unfold....(lots of "miracle" phrases, perhaps!);^) Did you always dream of a daughter? Than that's aplicable...a daughter, you received!!! Again, I am not trying to be presumptious....I have just been so touched by your story....

I have never signed before, but read your blog and enjoy it and am praying for you with both kids, I want to let you know, I went to ebay and typed in special needs scrapbooking and there are a couple things that pop up and one lady says she looks for things that someone really needs to have for scrapbooking. I believe her name was a mom's love scrapbooking plus. You could check into that also...Good luck, but I agree withsome of the others, scrapbook all her picutres, it is who she is, and as hard as it is,it may help you and give her great pleasure one day. I think we all have that dream of a the cookie cutter life, and then damn it life throws a wrench into the cookie and it doesnt taste the way we planned it to. All we can do is enjoy the sweet parts of the cookie and get through the bitter parts as best as we can.

Where have I been? I went to check your blog and bam! I see three entries. Shame on me! I'm proud of you for attempting the scrapbook. I agree with Andrea. Put those NICU pics in. It just shows the strength and courage all of you have and while painful, you have succeeded. Love you, J
p.s. as for cookie cutters... even for baking cookies they suck! Half the time, the damn dough gets stuck in them. So, my point, you're right, just b/c something looks a certain way on the outside, doesn't mean the inside is so perfect!
